🌸 The Divine Poet-Saint and Incarnation of Bhū Devi
Among the twelve Āḻvārs of South India, Goddess Āṇḍāl (also called Godā Devi) stands as the only woman saint and the incarnation of Bhū Devi, Mother Earth herself. Born in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, she dedicated her entire life to Sri Vishnu, composing sacred Tamil hymns that express the soul’s yearning for union with the Divine.
Āṇḍāl’s devotion represents the highest Bhakti Yoga — total surrender, selfless love, and divine longing. Through her, we learn that the path to God is not through rituals alone, but through pure, unbroken devotion.
📜 History & Scriptural Significance
Āṇḍāl was found as a divine infant under a Tulasi plant by the saint Periyāḻvār, who raised her in temple service. From childhood, she adorned herself with garlands meant for Lord Vishnu, unable to resist the desire to offer herself to Him.
When Periyāḻvār discovered this, he was troubled — but a divine vision revealed that the Lord of Srirangam accepted the garlands touched by Āṇḍāl. Since then, the tradition of “Āṇḍāl Mālai” (Andal garlands) continues in many Vishnu temples.
Her two great literary works —
✨ Tiruppāvai (30 verses) and
✨ Nācciyār Tirumozhi (143 verses) —
are spiritual treasures recited daily across South India and worldwide.
